TOURNAMENT SUMMARY

14 Pink had a fun weekend at the NoDinx/NCVA Jr. Far Western’s Tournament at the Reno Sparks Convention Center and the Reno Event Center in Reno, NV. We finished seeded 15th (started at 21), with 5 wins and 3 losses. We fought hard all weekend, playing together as a team while facing some tough competition.

Thank you to all the parents for supporting their daughters and other players on the team.

OFFENSE—THINGS TO CELEBRATE!

Serving

  • The team averaged a 20% ace percentage!
  • Cami and Claire led the team in aces.
  • Meeting goals: Going in to the tournament we had a team goal of serving 80%, and we surpassed this goal, serving as a team at 90%!

Hitting

  • The team averaged a 30% kill percentage, with 464 Hitting Attempts!
  • Andrea led the team with 32 kills. We had multiple players with kills in the double digits!
  • Out of system plays: When we are out of system, players are communicating more so that we can be ready to send the 3rd ball over the net…sometimes with an aggressive attack!

OFFENSE—THINGS TO PRACTICE…

Serving

  • More aggressive serving: coaches will continue to incorporate zone serving into practice and will be adding jump serving too!

Hitting

  • Have a more diverse offense: All 3 hitters should be utilized when setting the front row.
  • Setting the hot hitter: Each game typically has a different hitter who is hitting particularly well. Running our offense around this hot hitter should lead to more earned points!

DEFENSE—THINGS TO CELEBRATE!

Receive

  • The team had 300 passing attempts (Serve Receive and Free Ball), with an average passing score of 1.82—we’re getting closer to our team goal!
  • Claire showed exceptional passing the entire weekend, passing over an average of 2.00 in almost every set!
  • Coaches were also impressed with Sophia and Alex’s defense.

Digging

  • Lilly and Cami led the team in most digs.
  • Reading the offense! Players did great knowing when to be in each defense, based on which type of attack was being sent over.

Blocking

  • Andrea led the team with 12 solo blocks!
  • Multiple players got touches at the net…Coaches are very excited to see this improvement!

DEFENSE—THINGS TO PRACTICE…

Receive

  • Transitioning to and from Home Base: We can’t get stuck in our serve receive positions, and should be hustling to our defensive spots as soon as we return the serve.
  • Don’t lose technique in the excitement of the game: Don’t stand up when we pass. Shoulders should not come up when receiving a serve. Platforms should stay in front of our bodies and be angled to target.

Digging

  • Communication. More talking and calling the ball at least three times will help players trust those around them, and result in stronger passes.

Blocking

  • Coaches would like players to focus on being confident in setting the block and then pressing forward at the net.
