TOURNAMENT SUMMARY

14 Pink had a fun weekend at the NCVA President’s Day Tournament at the San Mateo Event Center in San Mateo, CA. We finished seeded 89th (started at 122), with 2 wins and 5 losses. We played some tough teams, but coaches were still able to see great improvements of individual players and how the team worked together at a higher level of competition.

Thank you to all the parents for supporting their daughters and other players on the team. Coaches are excited to get to know more of you as the season progresses.

OFFENSE—THINGS TO CELEBRATE!

Serving

  • The team averaged a 22% ace percentage!
  • Almost every player that served had at least 1 ace! Cami led the team in aces, with many others not far behind.
  • Kayla S. had a fantastic service run on Day 1, with 10 serves in a row!
  • Meeting goals: Going in to the tournament we had a team goal of serving 80%, and we surpassed this goal, serving as a team at 85%!

Hitting

  • The team averaged a 22% kill percentage, with 266 Hitting Attempts!
  • Ciera and Lilly had the highest kill percentages, both at 28%!
  • From the middle and outside, Kayla S. and Lilly led the team in kills. Ciera, Andrea, and Claire also showed great improvements in their hitting!

OFFENSE—THINGS TO PRACTICE…

Serving

  • More zone serving at practice will help players serve aggressively yet with controlled placement.
  • Serving confidently: Coaches would like every player on the team to be full of confidence walking back to the serving line. More reps at practice will help each player be game-time ready.

Hitting

  • Have a more diverse offense: All 3 hitters should be utilized when setting the front row. This tournament was better than the last, but this is still an area coaches would like to focus on!
  • Out of system plays: When we are out of system, players should be communicating more so that we can be ready to send the 3rd ball over the net…hopefully with an aggressive attack!

DEFENSE—THINGS TO CELEBRATE!

Receive

  • Rotations! Overall, coaches were still very impressed with players knowing their rotations—there was less assistance from coaches telling players where they needed to be, and more player-to-player communication!
  • The team had over 260 passing attempts (Serve Receive and Free Ball), with an average passing score of 1.82—we’re getting closer to our team goal!

Digging

  • Lilly and Selina led the team in most digs.
  • Downball defense vs. Freeball defense. Players did great knowing when to be in each defense, based on which type of attack was being sent over.

Blocking

  • Andrea led the team with 3 solo blocks!
  • Multiple players got touches at the net…Coaches are very excited to see this improvement!

DEFENSE—THINGS TO PRACTICE…

Receive

  • Transitioning to and from Home Base: We can’t get stuck in our serve receive positions, and should be hustling to our defensive spots as soon as we return the serve.
  • Rotations: While most players did well knowing when and where they are supposed to be, coaches would like each player to know all rotations for all positions. Understanding rotations is a necessity for players to succeed at higher levels of volleyball.
  • Don’t stand up when we pass: Shoulders should not come up when receiving a serve. Platforms should stay in front of our bodies and be angled to target.

Digging

  • Communication. More talking and calling the ball at least three times will help players trust those around them, and result in stronger passes.
  • Tip Defense: We can’t get caught too deep (or too short!) in our defense. Reading a hitter around the block will help players know when to cover short or stay deep.

Blocking

  • We are still just beginning to cover blocking at practice. Coaches would like players to focus on pressing forward when blocking at the net. More reps at practice will help develop a confidence that can be translated to game-play!
